Windows 7, 64-bit, and Help

A few quick notes:

1) I'm currently running MultiLJ on a Windows 7 Home Premium machine. So far, all is well.

2) My Windows 7 machine is also running 64-bit, which reveals an interesting side effect. MultiLJ switches to 64-bit operation when run on a 64-bit operating system, which speeds things up noticeably. However, anything that requires Flash will not function, not because of any problem with MultiLJ, but because Adobe hasn't released a 64-bit version of Flash. Once they do, Flash features should work properly.

3) Apparently, the version of Help that I am creating will work under both Vista and Windows 7.

No new versions are in the works at the moment, but once I get some spare time, I do have a small wish list that deserves some attention. In particular, I want to add photo management, but this is something of an undertaking.

That's all for now!

At last! A new version...

I've just uploaded a new version of MultiLJ to the download page. The primary change in the new version is the addition of a Poll Editor. Note that if you write a poll and are not qualified to post it, you will receive an error message upon the attempt to post.

I've also fixed some bugs that have been identified and did a general overhaul of certain sections of code - the net result (or is that .NET result...) is that the program runs a bit faster than before. I'm seriously thinking about converting some sections of the code from Visual Basic to C#, both for the experience and to try to get a little more speed out of the program.

Enjoy!

Really, there's a new version coming...

I've been doing some touch-ups in MultiLJ recently, mainly fixes of subtle bugs. For example, you would think that by closing a given browser and re-opening it, you would get a fresh copy of the page you were looking at. Well, it wasn't happening - apparently I have to clear the cache for that page first if I want to guarantee a new copy. It now works, with the exception of communities, for rather arcane reasons. In cases where it doesn't work, like communities, just hit the (Ref) button - that will refetch the page.

A few other subtle things like that have been repaired, too. So pretty soon now, I'll be sending up the new release, which will include the new Poll Editor. Oh, and by the way, I recently revived the XP computer on which the Help system is stored. So, in a future release, Help will be in sync with the program. This is all knowing that Help only works in XP...

New version forthcoming...

I've been working on MultiLJ code for a little while, and I should be releasing a new version fairly soon. The main change that will be obvious is the addition of a Poll Creator in the Post Editor. Additionally, I've been running around in the code in general, trying to optimize it a bit, and it seems to be running a bit faster now. If there are any suggestions for improvements before I release this version, drop a comment, and I'll see what I can do.

Help and Vista...

One thing that still baffles me is the status of Windows XP Help under Vista. The Help File for MultiLJ was written under Windows XP, and is supposed to be incompatible with Vista. However, every great once in a while, I'll forget and hit the "Help Topics" menu anyway (I run Vista, obviously), and about 1 in 20 times, Help will appear. Go figure...

And yes, I'm aware that the Help File is a bit behind. The machine on which I develop it recently crashed, so until it's repaired, Help development is frozen. Sorry.

MultiLJ Progress Goes "Boink"! (version 1.1.5.0)

I've just posted version 1.1.5.0 of MultiLJ on the download page for your edification. The primary change from version 1.1.4.0 is that now, MultiLJ is fully Unicode – as I just demonstrated, you may now use Alt-Numberpad combinations to add symbols to posts, and people typing on Cyrillic keyboards may now use MultiLJ in their native language. Other than that, there were a couple of bug fixes and internal improvements, as well.

I'm running out of basic features to add to the program before I dive into something major like picure uploading. So if you have suggestions or requests, this is the time to make them.

Version 1.1.4 now released

I've just posted a new version of MultiLJ onto the download psge for your reading and posting pleasure. One of its primary bug fixes is the the fact that if for some reason the LJ server hiccups on a new or edited post of yours, instead of simply vanishing (edits and all), the post editor will now stay on the screen, allowing you to correct and resubmit the post. Other features have been added, and the menus have been altered to reflect these and future enhancements.

Enjoy!

Corrected version just posted

I've just posted a corrected version of MultiLJ this morning - version 1.1.3 - for your downloading pleasure. I've finally killed (once and for all) the bug that would sometimes would cause an "Unhandled Exception" when you open the Post editor - caused by an improperly handled refresh of the Friends List. If you still have that problem, please let me know...

New version!

Short form: I ended up completely rewriting the code that communicates with the LJ server, and so far it seems much more reliable. I've even tested it with a 56K modem and, while the initial login time is a bit slow, it functions perfectly well at that speed now. Also, I've found that if a web browser seems to log you off, just refresh it and it will relog you in.

The .msi file is in the usual place - just go to the multilj community and click on the download page link.

It's out!

The new version of MultiLJ is on the download page, so go ahead and get it. It's now a .msi file, instead of a .zip file, so all you have to do is download it and immediately go to it and double-click on it to start the installation process.

Enjoy!
